4 Features - visual design and reverse engineering. If you want to get work done, rather than blindly hold on to open source, command line installs, and browser just because it is free, by all means, get Navicat. Use your brain, use open source, if it is good, but too much open source stuff will waste years of a professional's life. Additionally, using an application for direct access always blows away any browser access in almost every way shape and form, especially speed, convenience and features.

Besides if you use this for business you will have done dozens of things with this before you have even figured out how to install, access, and use WebMin. The interface still needs works, to improve the flow and ergonomics (HI considerations seem to have been forgotten about by most including Apple about a decade ago.), but this is a very useful and rather featured tool.Īnd, so what if you have to pay. It is light years better and easier than using WebMin.

If you think that being forced to install things via command lines in Terminal is primitive and idiotic and should have been abandoned in 80's, then you'll like Navicat. Would be nice if I could see the results on the same window somehow. So, whenever I need to compare results of two or more queries, I find myself opening multiple tabs and going back and forth between them. Also, older results will disappear as soon as you edit the SQL or want to type in something new. The query tool does process multiple SQL commands but will return results for only the last.

Not sure what you lose, but probably implies they devote less resources to the Mac side of their business. The Mac version, for some reason, trails one point behind the Windows/Linux version. Also, there is something unintuitive about the whole process because I find myself having to resort to the mouse when adding stuff: Tabbing will not get you to all editable fields. When in table design, you can't duplicate rows. I frequently find myself typing up the SQL in a text editor like TextMate and pasting it into Navicat.

The GUI for editing triggers and stored procedures is non-intuitive. Very frustrating if you have several or more query tabs open! Related to the above: You lose all your unsaved queries when it crashes. It regularly crashes whenever I use SSH tunneling on the road.

Or grab the free version off their website if you are going to use it non-commercially. If you do heavy editing, you'll appreciate its versatility compared to web-based solutions. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best MySQL editor on the Mac. Have been using Navicat for over two years.
